How to Conquer Distractions

We’re talking about how to conquer the 5 most common obstacles in life this week so you can live the best version of yourself. Today is day 3, the past 2 days we talked about fear and procrastination, and today we’ll conquer distractions. Have you ever felt like you were on a journey and something took you off course? Well today you’ll get some practical tips to combat your distractions.


If you watch any movie it starts with character development, then conflict, followed by a resolution. But that’s not just in movies, we are the hero in our own personal story, and when we want to go on a journey, what happens? Opponents show up! This could be the marketing agencies selling you their products, your friends and family sharing their opinions, or social media notifications. Did you know the average person sees 400 different food ads in a day? You need to learn to live life on your own terms, take over your own story.


Getting over distractions starts with knowing what you want from life. Get good at being clear on what you want and who you want to be. Success is willingly delaying gratification, which starts with knowing what’s distracting you. Once you know what you want, write it down and read it every day so that your mind is focused on what you want. Where focus goes energy flows. Clarify why you want to achieve these goals and attach emotions to it. Then develop an action plan, what are 5 steps you can take to reach that goal? This alone will lessen the distractions around you and enhance your attention and focus.


If you spend a few hours watching television everyday, what would happen long-term if you took half an hour away from that each day to read a book, learn an instrument, or just appreciate life? Ask if the things you’re doing are congruent with your life goals. Have you ever said you would only watch one Netflix episode, but end up watching 10? Why does this happen? It’s because of momentum. If you take action towards your goals, momentum will swing in favor of that, but if you take action in the opposite direction, momentum will keep you moving away from your goals. Objects in rest stay at rest, and objects in motion stay in motion.
